Adult-onset diabetes also called diabetes type 2 or non-insulin-dependent diabetes is a common disorder that affects the way the body processes and uses carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Each of these nutrients is a source of glucose (sugar), your body's main source of fuel. Insulin is necessary for the body to be able to use glucose for energy. In diabetics either the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or the cells ignore the insulin resulting in a build up of glucose in the blood. When glucose builds up in the blood instead of going into cells, the body's cells are not able to function properly and over time damages to vital organs will occur.

There's no cure for type 2 diabetes, but you can manage or even prevent the onset of the condition with certain lifestyle changes. Start by eating a balanced diet, exercising and maintaining a healthy body weight. If diet and exercise aren't enough, you may need diabetes medications or insulin therapy to manage your blood sugar level.

Being physically active is a crucial tool in managing your diabetes. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommend 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week. When you exercise, you will feel "charged-up", both physically and emotionally. It will improve your overall health and plays a key role in your body's ability to control blood sugar.

Aggressive management of high blood sugar, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and weight are essential in preventing or delaying the onset of long term complications of diabetes. Working together with a support network and your health care providers is the first step in winning the battle of diabetes but ultimately it is up to you to take control of your disease and your life. Self-management is fundamental to being successful but you want to ensure you have the correct knowledge and tools to create a sustainable health routine. Working with a personal trainer is the answer to assist you in the development of a program that will fit your life and needs.
